Orienteering & Hiking

From woodland paths, limestone valleys to open moorland plateaus the Peak District affords diverse contrasts in scenery and terrain.

Walking in the Peak District

Your orienteering and hiking journey could negotiate all types of terrain including defined rights of way, scrambling over rocks and cascades, through peat bogs, even micro navigating your way across the moors in poor visibility to the site of an historic aircraft crash.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points, which are marked on a unique map. Deciding which route to take in order to maximise the number of control points visited in the shortest time promotes strategic thinking and spontaneous decision making.

Developmentโ€จ โ€“ Within the smallest of teams โ€˜keenerโ€™ navigators will emerge to take on roles of practical leadership. We organise our orienteering activities / events with this is mind. By placing equal importance on group management and effective time keeping we factor in additional roles of responsibility to keep all participants motivated and focused on the broader task.

Mountain Walking

Acclimbatize staff are available to support your UK and overseas mountain expeditions in any seasonal or climatic conditions.ย โ€จMembers of our staff team are qualified Mountaineering Instructors and / or holders of the the International Mountain Leaders Carnet.ย โ€จWe can supply qualified professionals to lead parties within the UK, on high altitude treks and on mountainous expeditions worldwide.

Developmentโ€จ โ€“ The benefits of expeditioning are comprehensively documented โ€“ personal discovery, self-reliance, perseverance, broadened horizons, commitment, teamwork, leadership and judgement are to mention just a few of the more obvious personal rewards. For many, even the most simple of expeditions can become a critical milestone in their development. For others, these endeavours may be a starting point of a lifetime spent actively pursuing more adventurous challenges.

Events

We frequently use orienteering as a themed thread on many of our adventurous events. โ€จGroups can be tasked with organising themselves to search wide areas in the most efficient and effective way. By doing this individual members can take responsibility for allocating roles or leading smaller groups in any way to best achieve the task.

Fantastic introduction to climbing Our family climbing introduction was a great experience for myself and my two teenage boys. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Our instructor was an experienced climber who was willing and able to guide three newbies through a range of challenges on the nearby gritstone features. Overall I would thoroughly recommend the experience.

Abseiling at Millesdale This was a great experience for us. We were a bunch of elderly ppl, stiff as a board and couldnโ€™t bend for anything, however the trainer showed great respect and tolerance and the event was brilliant. Thank you for the fantastic trainer whose name was Chris. Four of us did the abseil at millesdale and absolutely enjoyed the whole experience.

Outstanding! I booked a whole day climbing for my sons (13 and 10) and husband who all took up indoor bouldering a few months back. Within a few minutes of meeting our instructor Chaz, he had picked up on their experience levels and personalised the whole day accordingly with the perfect level of challenge for them all. They got to do various roped climbs of increasing difficulty on slabs and up cracks, scrambling, abseiling, through caves and ending with an almost sheer climb that Chaz knew would be too hard to complete but gave our eldest the perfect aspiration for his next steps in climbing. Throughout the day Chaz also gave them loads of praise and support as well as fantastic tips and techniques that they will be able to take forward. He also told us about some local history, the rock formations and great climbing stories, as well as recommendations of other bouldering sites and films. Couldnโ€™t be more pleased with the entire day. Our 13 year old said it was the best day of his life and that he would give 10 stars out of 5.

Super family activity Fantastic archery session with Tracey and Drew. They organised 20 competitive adults and 2 children giving us enough of a safety briefing to keep us safe without it spoiling the fun. Super helpful tuition without mansplaining! They kept the activity from becoming samey by introducing different competitions and were absolutely brilliant with the 5 and 8 year old who were totally included in the whole activity. Would thoroughly recommend ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿน๐ŸŽฏ

AWESOME! I took a group of 15 year old from a specialist school, all the children had additional needs. As part of a residential we had a day and a half with Accimbatize, Andy ,Tom, and Drew our instructors we awesome in engaging with our pupils giving the right amount of encouragement and support to some very anxious young people. They were patient and interested in all the individuals to ensure everyone achieved some personal challenge. The various activities gave something for everyone, Giants Cave a special place with brilliant explanation around it's formation and history. The back admin office were really helpful with our booking and completing consents. I would most highly recommend these guys for and adventure day out. Very safe friendly, for any group and especially including groups with special educational needs and disabilities. Thank you we will certainly book with you again.

Amazing adventures with great instructors I took a group of Scouts on a four day camp from Surrey. Sam helped me organise the whole trip, finding an itinerary that worked for our schedule and budget. We took part in three activities: caving, gulley scrambling, and climbing. All three were fantastic and the Scouts loved it. The level was pitched just right. It provided a challenge, but was never too difficult. Instructors all friendly and professional. Highly recommended and Iโ€™ll be using them again!

Our 5th time booking with Acclimbatize in 5 years! We went rock climbing and abseiling, plus some woolcraft, this weekend, with a group of about 24 children ranging from 4 to 16. Chris, Chas, Andy and Tracy were all absolutely great leaders, they created a relaxed but exciting atmosphere, challenging all the children to their limits and rewarding them with endless encouragement and words of advice. Everyone had a superb time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orienteering sessions usually begin with learning or refreshing some fundamental map work skills. These typically include; setting the map to ground, learning the scale, map symbols, identification of features, and some route planning. Once the basics are in place participants may be asked to find a single point and return to a central control point. This process may be repeated until the facilitator is confident to give a whole course. Orienteering can last up to 3 hours โ€“ but our navigation days can be full 7 or 8 hour days.

There is no limit to the amount of people on orienteering depending on the location. Participants will be organised into small teams and set off in time windows.

Fitness levels can be factored into the event as part of the day โ€ฆ those extremely fit ones can go further and faster while other team members deal with the overall strategy or timekeeping.

Navigation training and hiking for groups can be done anywhere in the UK, we prefer to operate in the Peak District for Orienteering.

Orienteering combines well with many other activities such as climbing, abseiling and scrambling.
