Orienteering & Hiking

From woodland paths, limestone valleys to open moorland plateaus the Peak District affords diverse contrasts in scenery and terrain.

Walking in the Peak District

Your orienteering and hiking journey could negotiate all types of terrain including defined rights of way, scrambling over rocks and cascades, through peat bogs, even micro navigating your way across the moors in poor visibility to the site of an historic aircraft crash.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points, which are marked on a unique map. Deciding which route to take in order to maximise the number of control points visited in the shortest time promotes strategic thinking and spontaneous decision making.

Development
 – Within the smallest of teams ‘keener’ navigators will emerge to take on roles of practical leadership. We organise our orienteering activities / events with this is mind. By placing equal importance on group management and effective time keeping we factor in additional roles of responsibility to keep all participants motivated and focused on the broader task.

Mountain Walking

Acclimbatize staff are available to support your UK and overseas mountain expeditions in any seasonal or climatic conditions.
Members of our staff team are qualified Mountaineering Instructors and / or holders of the the International Mountain Leaders Carnet.
We can supply qualified professionals to lead parties within the UK, on high altitude treks and on mountainous expeditions worldwide.

Development
 – The benefits of expeditioning are comprehensively documented – personal discovery, self-reliance, perseverance, broadened horizons, commitment, teamwork, leadership and judgement are to mention just a few of the more obvious personal rewards. For many, even the most simple of expeditions can become a critical milestone in their development. For others, these endeavours may be a starting point of a lifetime spent actively pursuing more adventurous challenges.

Events

We frequently use orienteering as a themed thread on many of our adventurous events.
Groups can be tasked with organising themselves to search wide areas in the most efficient and effective way. By doing this individual members can take responsibility for allocating roles or leading smaller groups in any way to best achieve the task.

An exhilarating experience - well worth trying. Everyone really enjoyed our morning of abseiling in a beautiful area of the Peak District. Sam was very professional and everyone felt safe in his hands. We had multiple goes of abseiling along with scrambling up the rock faces. What a great day out we had, thanks Sam.

Rock Climbing Trip September 2025 This was such an excellent experience! Our tour guides, Chris, Daljeet, Clara, and Andy P. were very encouraging and funny. They lightened the mood with jokes, but pushed us and showed us the ropes (pun intended) as well. The climbs themselves were tricky but manageable, and it's really more about getting the experience than making it to the top. They may have inspired a future in rock climbing!

Howling winds no deterrent to climbing Had 2 days with these guys well worth it. Despite torrential rain and howling winds they kept us busy climbing, abseiling caving and gorge walking.

Excellent, knowledgable, friendly climbing guide Booked a solo rock climbing day and had an ideal experience. Can’t praise my guide, Chas, enough. I am an intermediate climber traveling from the US. I didn’t want to travel with gear nor feel overwhelmed by climbing in an unfamiliar area. So booking a guide made sense. My guide, Chas, was literally the most knowledgeable outdoor climber I have ever met. In addition to belaying me on a ton of routes, he was happy to share his deep experience with setting ropes, trad climbing, knots, climbing techniques, etc. Despite being probably 30 years older than me, I’m sure Chas is a better climber. This guy is a legend. I highly recommend!

A great experience in some beautiful settings! What an absolutely wonderful experience! I felt skeptical booking this for my family of 4 (2 daughters aged 9 and 5) as I felt uncertain as to whether the team could cater to all ages. However, the team and experience surpassed all of my expectations. Every team member we came across was so lovely and friendly and our trip leader, Matt, was outstanding - he showed such patience and kindness when my daughter was nervous with the abseiling part of the event. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience from start to finish (we did half a day of rock climbing and canoeing) and both myself and my husband felt it was worth every penny - a great experience in some beautiful settings.

Brilliant first ever climb and abseiling! We went scrambling, rock climbing and abseiling with Andy. Four children and two adults. It was amazing! The company do everything right. Communication was brilliant and they asked what we wanted out of the experience. Andy had so much knowledge and our experience was fantastic. I highly recommend this company. Fully supportive, great instructions felt safe and able to enjoy the whole afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orienteering sessions usually begin with learning or refreshing some fundamental map work skills. These typically include; setting the map to ground, learning the scale, map symbols, identification of features, and some route planning. Once the basics are in place participants may be asked to find a single point and return to a central control point. This process may be repeated until the facilitator is confident to give a whole course. Orienteering can last up to 3 hours – but our navigation days can be full 7 or 8 hour days.

There is no limit to the amount of people on orienteering depending on the location. Participants will be organised into small teams and set off in time windows.

Fitness levels can be factored into the event as part of the day … those extremely fit ones can go further and faster while other team members deal with the overall strategy or timekeeping.

Navigation training and hiking for groups can be done anywhere in the UK, we prefer to operate in the Peak District for Orienteering.

Orienteering combines well with many other activities such as climbing, abseiling and scrambling.
