Orienteering and Gorge Scrambling

Adventure Days in the Peak District

From gorge scrambling over cascades, to weaselling through boulders.
From woodland paths, limestone valleys to open moorland plateaus the Peak District affords diverse contrasts in scenery and terrain.
Your orienteering and gorge scrambling journey could negotiate all types of terrain including defined rights of way, scrambling over rocks and cascades, through peat bogs, even micro navigating your way across the moors in poor visibility to the site of an historic aircraft crash.

Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both mind and body. The aim is to navigate between control points, which are marked on a unique map. Deciding which route to take in order to maximise the number of control points visited in the shortest time promotes strategic thinking and spontaneous decision making.

Development
 – Within the smallest of teams ‘keener’ navigators will emerge to take on roles of practical leadership. We organise our orienteering activities / events with this is mind. By placing equal importance on group management and effective time keeping we factor in additional roles of responsibility to keep all participants motivated and focused on the broader task.

Events –
We frequently use orienteering as a themed thread on many of our adventurous events.
Groups can be tasked with organising themselves to search wide areas in the most efficient and effective way. By doing this individual members can take responsibility for allocating roles or leading smaller groups in any way to best achieve the task.

Geo Cache

Geo caching is an outdoor sport in which participants use hand held GPS (Global Positioning Systems) and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers or markers called ‘Geo Caches’.

A typical ‘Cache’ may be a small waterproof container containing a logbook or trading items such as trinkets. Geo Caching is often described as high tech treasure hunting, it shares many aspects of orienteering. Geo Caching can easily be set up to support learning programmes at a location of your convenience.

Gorge Scrambling – Peak District

Our gorge scrambling activities are pitched to be exciting, lively and a great fun activity, which usually takes place within the Dark Peak area, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Gorge scrambling is used frequently by groups requiring a spirited, lively shared experience. The playful character and situation of this activity make it very popular as a unique recreational occasion.
Gorge scrambling with younger groups can produce a genuine sense of adventure and exploration.

Group Leadership
 – We equip all participants with a helmet, suit and Wellington boots before progressing up the gorge to negotiate a combination of natural obstacles including logs, short climbs, waterfalls and deep pools. We will also include some ‘imaginative’ team tasks and personal challenges along the way!
Be sure to pack your best fitting sense of humour.

Development
 – Gorge scrambling requires effective personal organisation (correct clothing) with obvious consequesces (later) for poor preparation.  Encouraging others and persevering in good humour during periods of sensory discomfort are evident personal qualities that will emerge during this activity.

Dark Peak Adventure Days

Why not use your orienteering and gorge scrambling as part of a bigger day out?
By continuing your journey up and onto the unique moorlands of the Dark Peak groups get a truly memorable action packed day out and we are rewarded with a genuine sense of achievement.
